Alumni Leaders In Session: Shawn Patrick Moore on China, with family and special guest

Midwest Young Artists Conservatory is proud to host our Alumni Leaders. This recital features Shawn Moore '06, violin, family members, brothers, Stanley '09/cello and Scott '07/viola, plus rising young Chinese pianist Zifan Wang, and MYAC faculty pianist, Michael Tan. on September 28 at 6PM. Shawn is the Asia Representative of Bard College Conservatory of Music U.S. Music Institute in Beijing so he will also share about what it's like to live in China these days.

Shawn Patrick Moore is a musician, composer, actor and cultural entrepreneur. He appears regularly on stages across China, including solo appearances, and festivals such as the Bard Music Festival and Tan Dun's “Yin Yao” Music Festival. His musical style traverses classical, folk, and electronic. He has collaborated with globally known artists such as Tan Dun, Joan Tower and Natalie Merchant in his pursuit of musical diversity. His 2022 album, "Violin Atlas," leads listeners from Bach's classics, to Beethoven's romanticism, and ends with jazz-style free improvisation and original contemporary music.

Shawn recently collaborated with acclaimed director Zhang Guoli, participating in the production of the Chinese version of "The Shawshank Redemption" stage play, with 15 shows in 2023 and over thirty shows scheduled for their 2024 China tour. This experience has expanded his artistic vocabulary and inspired new projects in film and composition. As an active composer and music producer, Shawn also contributed original music to the production of the "The Shawshank Redemption". His original work for orchestra, "Ode to the Red Cliffs", was premiered February 2025 by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Naomi Woo.

Shawn’s production company, YF Studio, is also actively engaged in music production and education. YF collaborates with companies like miHoYo and Tencent in music production, and is also committed to providing high-quality music education and opportunities for the next generation of young artists.

As the Asia Representative of renowned institute of higher education, Bard College, Shawn also strives to promote liberal arts education for future generations. Through his multifaceted efforts in music, performance, and education, Shawn demonstrates his strength and influence as a leading figure in the cultural and creative industries in China.

Shawn is a graduate of Bard College and Yale University, holds dual degrees in music and Asian studies, and speaks English, Mandarin and Korean. He currently resides in Beijing.


Zifan Wang is a rising young pianist who has distinguished himself on international stages from Vienna to Singapore. He has won top honors including First Prize in the Singapore International Piano Competition (ABRSM division) and awards at the Asia Piano Competition, the German Peace & Arts International Piano Competition, and the Vienna Liszt International Youth Piano Competition—where he was the only non-music major recognized. Zifan has performed alongside world-renowned artists such as Lang Lang and collaborated with vocalists at international festivals in Hong Kong and Greece. In addition to performance, he is also a creative artist, directing and composing music for films and documentaries exploring Chinese cultural themes. His most recent film won best youth documentary film award in the Cannes 2025 film festival. He studies piano in Beijing with world renowned pianist Lang Lang, and cello with Wenqian Feng, and attends high school at the Beijing No. 4 middle school.


Cellist Stanley Moore, an alumni of Midwest Young Artists '09, Stanley graduated from Bard College with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts in Music with the Class of 2016. Most recently he has taught music and cello at the British School of Nord-Anglia in Beijing, China. Having had the great opportunity to travel as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician in various concerts across the U.S. , China, Europe and many other countries of the world, Stanley is very appreciative to have had the opportunity to study with wonderful cello teachers such as Craig Trompeter, Hans-Jorgen Jensen, Nazar Dzhuryn Peter Wiley, and Luis-Garcia Renart. Stanley very much enjoys passing down to his students the knowledge and love of music making that these wonderful teachers were able to instill in him. Having grown up in a music family, Stanley espouses the importance of having supportive individuals, friends, family members, and teachers alongside ourselves to guide and encourage us in our musical endeavors.


Performing as both a violinist and violist, Scot Moore works in a variety of musical genres. Active in early, classical, and new music communities, he is also an experienced performer in folk, rock, jazz, latin, pop, and contemporary improvisation. With a wide range of stylistic proficiency, Scot has enjoyed working with such notable and varied artists as Natalie Merchant, Neal Schon, Dawn Upshaw, Peter Serkin, Amanda Palmer, Andre Nickatina, and Bill T. Jones.

Currently the assistant principal viola of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, Scot leads an active performance schedule also appearing with SF Opera, Monterey Symphony, Symphony San Jose, Santa Cruz Symphony (asst. principal viola), One Found Sound, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Mercury Soul, Awesöme Orchestra Collective, San Francisco Philharmonic, and in collaboration with numerous other local artists.

Scot has worked with a broad array of the worlds finest composers and performers: Joan Tower, Pauline Oliveros, William Parker, George Tsontakis, Benjamin Boretz, Mason Bates, Don Byron, Tania Leon, Michael Harrison, David Lidov, Joseph Summer, Aki Takahashi, Harold Farberman, Kyle Gann, Pablo Ortiz, Richard Teitelbaum, Heather Masse, Dylan Mattingly, David Bloom, and Steve Hackman, amongst many others. Scot can be heard on releases from PBS, ESPN, Cartoon Network, Hyperion, Navona, Nonesuch, Albany Records, and various independent self releases. He has premiered music in collaboration with Contemporaneous, Da Capo Chamber Players, Bang On a Can All-Stars, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, One Found Sound, Mercury Soul, and Shattered Glass, and leads an active role in the promotion, production, and performance of new music. In the Historical Performance world he has collaborated with the Sebastians, TENET Vocal Artists, and Early Music New York.

Scot earned his BA, BM, MA, and Performance Certificate from Bard College. During his years as a student, Scot worked extensively with members of the Beaux Arts Trio, Julliard, Orion, Mendelssohn, Pacifica, Colorado, Tashi, and Guarneri quartets, as well as notable pianists Gilbert Kalish, Seymour Lipkin, and Peter Serkin. Scot's past teachers include: Edward Kreitman, Cyrus Forough, Desiree Ruhstrat, Laurie Smukler, Daniel Phillips, Luis Garcia Renart, and Marka Gustavsson.
