Young Music Scholars Program

Many students who audition for MYAC’s programs have the benefit of financial support or a teacher providing them with private lessons, an instrument, transportation and encouragement in their love and pursuit of making music. However, not all students are this fortunate. That is why in 2010, MYAC started the Young Music Scholars and Young Music Scholars Mentors Program, also known as YMS.

Young Music Scholars brings music education to students who may not otherwise have access to private lessons and exceptional ensemble experiences. YMS students receive private instruction from professional teachers and mentorship from peers on Monday afternoons/evenings, and participate in MYAC orchestra and chamber music programs on Saturdays all at a reduced tuition rate of $100 per school year.

YMS students are welcomed into the MYAC family as a member of one of our six orchestras that meet to rehearse on Saturdays, and attend music theory classes in addition to these rehearsals. Three major concerts showcase our orchestras’ hard work and are held during the year at Pick-Staiger Hall at Northwestern University campus and other remarkable concert venues.

Additionally, YMS students perform a solo recital twice a year to demonstrate their progress within the program. These recitals give students the opportunity to play alongside a piano accompanist and help motivate them to continue improving their skills. MYAC also holds auditions annually to encourage and allow for students to advance to the next level orchestra when they feel ready.

We believe that ALL students should be given the opportunity to play an instrument and learn music if they wish!
