CHICAGO FLUTE WORKSHOP

(no audition- all registrants accepted!)

MYAC Chicago Flute Workshop offers intensive musical training on flute while building confidence both musically and personally.

Students will perform daily, focusing on good fundamentals, and learn to play musically within a chamber group. This workshop provides an opportunity for students to experience the training that it takes to become a professional flutist. Chicago Flute Workshop is perfect for aspiring flutists in Junior High and High School. Graduating High School Seniors are welcome.

The Chicago Flute Workshop takes place at the historic MYAC Center in Fort Sheridan at 878 Lyster Road, Highwood, IL. In this picturesque and nurturing environment, students participate in an immersive experience which includes master classes, technique classes, performance classes, flute choir, smaller chamber music ensembles, and MYAC Evening Orchestras -- which is included in tuition.

LEVEL 1 - 1:30 - 4:00 PM
For advanced Elementary School students, and also Middle School students as of Fall 2024.

LEVEL 2 - 3:15 - 6:00 PM
For High School students as of Fall 2024. Graduating High School Seniors are welcome.

Flutist Hideko Amano was born in Japan and came to the United States at the age of 12. Upon arriving in America, she began studying flute under Ms. Susan Levitin, and soon won many young artist competition awards. Her performance debut occurred at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Hall (Symphony Center), where she performed as a soloist for Chaminade’s Concertino for Flute and Orchestra.

Ms. Amano earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she studied under the prominent flutist Ms. Paula Robison. She gave a joint performance with Ms. Robison in a concert series for the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. She continued her musical education in Paris, France studying with Mathieu Dufour, who has since joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as principal flutist. Presently Mr. Dufour moved back to Europe and he is a principal soloist flute of Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany. While studying in Paris, she also performed in many international Chamber Music Festivals and concerts in Italy, England, Israel and Morocco. Since her return to Chicago in 1998, she has continued her career as an active recitalist. She has performed on the WFMT 98.7 Monday Evening Series and Dame Myra Hess Concert Series at Cultural Center. In 2018, she was invited to the International Flute Festival in Lima, Peru as their guest artist to perform with the orchestra, giving recital and masterclasses.

In addition to her performing career, Ms. Amano also maintains a growing private studio. Her students have won numerous competitions and went on to study at major universities. She has students who attended and are currently attending Juilliard, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Illinois, Northwestern University, Cleveland Institute, and Indiana University. From 2003 to 2007, Ms. Amano was an adjunct professor of flute at DePaul University in Lincoln Park, Illinois. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Carthage College, WI, Harper College IL, University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, IL.

Mariana Gariazzo holds academic positions at the University of Illinois Chicago and VanderCook College of Music. She earned a Master of Music from Yale University and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. She has been a recipient of several awards and distinctions in solo and chamber music categories including Fundacion Antorchas, Juventudes Musicales, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo Symphony Orchestra, and the Robert Wilson Award for Outstanding Woodwind Performance at Yale. In addition, she has been awarded multiple grants to support projects in pedagogy such as the Innovative Pedagogy Grant, the Arts Enhancement Grant, and the Melbern G. Glasscock Center Co-Sponsorship Grant, the Academic Innovation Grant, the High Impact Innovation Practices, and the Advance Climate Together Grant at Texas A&M University.

Gariazzo enjoys a growing reputation as an engaging and thought-provoking pedagogue, lecturer and performer. She is a sought-after clinician and serves on the adjudication panels of national and international competitions. Her research focuses on new music by Latin American composers and she has served as a guest artist and speaker on the subject at prominent venues and conferences in Europe, Asia, Latin and North America. She has been invited to present and perform at multiple National Flute Association Conventions, the Texas Music Association Conference, the Puerto Rico Flute Symposium (Puerto Rico), World Flutes Festival (Argentina), the International Low Flutes Festival (USA, Japan), the International Flute Festival of Lima (Peru) and university campuses across the USA. 

Gariazzo serves as President of the Chicago Flute Club and is Program Chair for the 53rd National Flute Association Convention in 2025. She actively collaborates with composers in commissioning, recording and performing new music for flutes. Her debut CD, Revelations, will be released by MSR Classic Records. www.marianagariazzo.com

2024 Summer Tuition and Refund Policy

Level 1 tuition is $390. Level 1 is intended for advanced elementary school students or middle schoolers, as of Fall 2024.
Level 2 tuition is $390. Level 2 is intended for students in grades 9 - 12 as of Fall 2024. Graduating High School Seniors are welcome.

Summer invoices will be sent out by June 1, 2024. Full payment is due two weeks before the program start date. Cancellations made prior to this date will be refunded minus the $100 non-refundable deposit. Cancellations after this date will not be refunded. There will be a 10% monthly fee for late payments.
