Oboes, Bassoons, and Community: MYAC’s Double Reed Festival

Highwood, IL — November 2, 2025 Oboists and bassoonists take pride in being somewhat rare breeds. While violinists can easily find community in the rich world of orchestral string playing, it is far harder for double reed players to find similar company. Few understand the intricacies of reed-making, and though musicians admire the haunting beauty of the oboe, bassoon, and English horn, few can quite explain how they achieve their unique allure.

To celebrate these instruments and their players, Midwest Young Artists Conservatory (MYAC) established its Double Reed Festival in 2014, following the success of its annual Double Bass and Viola Festivals. The event has since become a beloved annual tradition, offering double reed players a chance to connect, learn, and perform together.

This year’s festival, held on Sunday, November 2, 2025, brought together over thirty double reed players, ranging from beginners to advanced students. Six clinicians from prominent Midwestern universities led students through workshops and masterclasses, guiding students through technical and musical challenges, while fostering community and collaboration. Students had a look at Mahler’s genius through rehearsing an original arrangement for bassoon choir of a sublime passage in Mahler’s 8th symphony; examined standard orchestral excerpts for bassoon; learned about and practiced extended techniques on the oboe; discussed the mechanics of oboe sound-production; and this is just a sample of the day’s classes. Two instrument and reed vendors brought instruments for students to try, and they furnished too their expert advice. The day concluded with a faculty recital and double reed choir performance, drawing a full audience at MYAC’s Center in Highwood.

The festival inspires and connects musicians of all ages and skill levels, celebrating the artistry, community, and unique voice of double reed instruments. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back for next year’s festival, and we look forward to the upcoming Double Bass Fest (February 22nd) and Viola Fest (March 1st).
