MYAC contributes to the cultural life of the greater Chicago area with many initiatives:
The YMS program offers creative and cultural experiences for students in underserved elementary schools around the MYAC Center by extending scholarships to them for participation in small group lessons and the MYA Reading Orchestra. The lessons are taught by members of the most advanced MYA orchestral program and provide an opportunity for these high school age students, under the guidance of master private teachers, to give of themselves by mentoring the younger musicians.
Beyond the Fort
MYAC chamber groups bring the uplifting spirit of music to senior centers, group homes, nursing and rehabilitation centers around the entire Chicago area. Chamber music, in the comfort of familiar surroundings, is a gift that MYAC students are able to give to residents who are unable to get out to concerts and do not often have the pleasure of live performances.
We consider collaboration with other arts organizations an important part of musical development; MYAC students add their voices to enhance the annual CSO holiday program “Welcome Yule” and instrumentalists have provided music for events such as Dance Chicago performances. All of these collaborations expand the reach of classical music into the community with the talents and passion of our young musicians.
This exceptional chamber orchestra is made up of select students from the MYA orchestral program, conducted by Charles Pikler, principal violist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The group travels to middle and high schools in the Chicago area to do in-school performances and serve as inspiration and motivation for their peers.
MYAC is committed to providing an affordable music program for all interested students. Currently MYAC offers financial assistance to 15% of our students a year; 32% receive tuition reductions for participating in more than one program, keeping costs of participation affordable. The financial aid budget has been significantly increased from years past, making the MYA ensemble programs accessible to all.
One Score One Chicago
MYAC has repeatedly collaborated with Ravinia in presenting in-school performances of the yearly selection of the “One Score, One Chicago" program. Thousands of public school students in Chicago and Waukegan are introduced to classical music thanks to the educational efforts of Ravinia and the enthusiasm and excellence of MYA chamber musicians.
In addition to these initiatives, MYAC offers assistance to Public School music programs with sheet music loans, music workshops, and instrument acquisition through MYAC’s instrument donation program.
