Steven Stenzel will begin teaching Music Theory and History at MYA this fall. Having earned his MMEd at Northwestern University, he continues as band director in Lake Zurich, where he has taught for the past 19 years. Prior to his current position, Steven taught music theory and conducting in Germany, capitalizing on his experiences of living in Vienna, Austria for the five years before college. Steven began teaching theory as a teaching assistant in the Wheaton Conservatory of music when he was an undergraduate.
In addition to his public school position, Steven has conducted the Round Lake Area Community Band, teaches piano and theory privately, freelances on piano and horn, and was conductor of the Fox Valley Youth Symphony for three seasons, leading them on tours of England, Scotland, Wales, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. He maintains an active role in the Illinois Grade School Music Association, hiring judges for contests, and is a member of IGSMA, IMEA, and MENC. Steven performs regularly on piano at the Evangelical Free Church of Crystal Lake. He lives in Holiday Hills with his wife, Joyce, and his three children, Rachel (violin in MYA Symphony), Anna (violin in MYA Concertino), and Nathan.
